It would be a very scary world if marketing was completely optimized and automated.

Hi Nick!
I'm going to chime in and say that I consider a landing page to be any page that a respondent lands on that includes content, copy, and a form all on one page.. : -)
I must chime in and say that regardless of how much effort you put into building and testing landing pages, conversion rates for single landing pages are the pits. In short - single landing pages that ask for a conversion after only one click are too much, too soon for users. We've been able to increase conversion rates 2-10x by creating multipage landing experiences.
Like you said, the page should provide relevant, focused, and detailed information about a product or service. Instead of trying to do that on one single page, we segment respondents by giving them VERY simple choices to make based on who they are and what they are looking, and each subsequent page that respondents land on delivers even more focused, more tailored and more relevant information about a product or service.
The multipage landing experience format gives companies the opportunity to slowly pitch and persuade, as well as build trust with respondents. Single pages that ask for a conversion after only one click can't do that...
Landing pages have limits. Multipage experiences overcome them.
