More importantly FOR Google,  they can now track two-stage behavioral patterns.
If they can track what the user searches beyond the second field, [since technically they are still on the Google Homepage]  they will gather far more accurate behavioral data in the aggregate.
This would give them exponentially more powerful targeting, and criteria for the next major algo formulation.
