one's person basic level is another person's advanced level. This site is called "Internet Marketing News and Discussion Forum". Not "Advanced Internet Marketing News and Discussion Forum". Nobody is an absolute expert in all fields of SEM so some linking trick may be interesting and novel for 90% of the people may be yesterday news for Debra or for Wiep or some other linking expert.

There are a lot of posts that do not bring anything new to my table either, but I don't confuse my table with everyone else's table.

Cool title.

Very interesting idea. I wonder how well it works, since people will gradually get more strict about their comment policies, which will render any such list pretty useless... especially if we are talking about blogs with high traffic...

Just wanted to add that I am seeing an unatural percentage of proxy scrapers in the results. Search for your name/handle and you will see a lot of twitter scrapers.

an influx of links, good rankings, then over time adjustment of link value and consequent decrease in locations... now what does that remind me of ?

even now i am still not sure who the mods are. I didn't know Tamar was a mod. It is not an issue.

Btw, this thread and one of my yesterday threads illustrate very well that we have at the moment "Desphinn Tyrrany" at Sphinn. Say welcome to Digg ;-)

Are you saying that the users should not express their negative opinion through the means that the community is providing them? Any opinion is welcome as long as it is positive ? Is this Soviet Union on Sphinn ?

Harith

You really need to stop this Google/Matt idolizing stint you got yourself into. Do you point your offline friends to Google Webmaster Guidelines when they insult you or do something unacceptable. I catch your comments sometimes on Matt's blog and I start feeling really uncomfortable from time to time... you are becoming the algorithm....

there is another thing, very typical of online communities, forums, etc. People get very invested in them and somehow start believing that their every suggestion should be accepted. There is no rational reason to believe so. You had a suggestion, you presented it to the owners/managers of the community, they said "thanks, but no thanks", get off your soap box and move on. Or leave or whatever, just get off the soap box.

While I tottaly aggree with SpostareDuro about the need to make members (especially new ones) of the community feel like this is a place where they can make a difference, there are cases when "making a difference" efforts become a burden for the community and start affecting the experience of the other users.

It is very engaging and that is the problem. There is a rare SEO-related update there and it just takes too much time of work... I totally get how it could be cool if i personally knew everyone there though...

this is an excellent post! Mirrors my thoughts exactly from the recent discussions on black hat on SMX or Lyndon's linkbait.

There is a great saying that I know from hebrew, so sorry if the translation is awkward, but people living in houses made of glass, should not go around throwing stones...

@ruud There are critics and there are critics. I hate it when a critique turns into a lynching mob. Calling someone out on a move can also be done calmly, reasonably and without getting personal, while remembering all the skeletons in our own closets...

yeah, in some cases google behaves according to the scenario you didn't ask about... gee thanks.
It is a politician's answer. Either say you cannot answer the question or don't say anything at all, but what is the point in answering the question you weren't asked ?

yep. he says that he is not confirming that the second anchor text will always pass value and says that it should be tested. Interesting

it would be interesting to see the impact of the "REport spam" option on the amount of spam around here. I think that DAnny and co should try to setup some kind of reward system for frequent spam reporters. This would reduce the amount of spam drastically and in turn discourage spammers from submitting here.

Another thing is that there must be a comment spam report button...

can we just get back to the SEO ?

I probably takes a while to update and start showing data. Just added it and it shows referres but nothing else... it will probably take  about 24 hours to show the real data, but it looks really nice. Clean, clear, one screen to see all the data... very nice.

Those two pages have no impact on the validity of Michael's test. A page containing the word [galore] linking to the home page with the anchor text [seo theory] does not make the home page more relevant for [seo theories galore].

So the text on the page that is issuing the link does not affect the relevancy of the page that is getting the link ? Links that come from a page relevant for [blue widget] will have the same impact on your rankings for [blue widget] as will the links coming from a page relevant to [car parts] or [casino] ? Or in another words, the text on the linking page does not contribute towards the relevancy of the page that is getting the link ? Live and learn.

BTW as I am seeing the SERPS now (both by using ?gl=US and through a US based proxy), Michael's site is ranking for [seo-tests-galore] (his first anchor text) and is nowhere to be found for [seo-theories-galore] (his second anchor text). So the test that came to disprove a theory, ended up proving it. That is the ABC of a Popperian test for a scientific theory - a theory can be called scientific only if one is able to devise an experiment that will disprove the theory. If after that test the theory is valid, then it can be said that the theory has been proven through a scientific method until a test disproving the theory is devised.

@Dan Thies - these are all excellent points. It is great when people don't take what is written on other blogs as sacred and go out and test it themselves. It is a pity when people like MM are not capable of doing it without throwing in things like "you people are sooo doing the 2007 SEO" or things in that spirit.

I am totally open for people debunking the findings of the experiments i conduct. Every time before I hit the "Submit" button, I have this vivid image of a room full of Google engineers, pissing themselves laughing from what I wrote. I fully take into account the possibility that what I am seeing is some local phenomenon, a product of the SI or the way I am conducting the searches or the setup of my experiment. After the last experiment, I got into numerous conversations with people that had remarks on the results or that have seen different things. Needless to say, none of them felt the need to write their words in a belittling way.

To everyone else, both here and on all the other threads, it is advisable to drop the statements like "i don't believe it is true", "it doesn't sound right" etc. In logic, it is called argument from incredulity (or ignorance) and is considered one of the major logical flaws, often used by Creationists in their vendetta against evolution. It is not scientific and it is not logical. Some things can be proven logically but there needs to be some testing done so you can base your logic in facts, even if the testing is not done by you.
