Ian you sound like a guy that I would jump at a chance to do business with, is it possible for you to do local organic listings for my site -- the term im after is :
"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu mortages"
Its big business here in Māori :)
Heheh @ g1smd (Ian) what is wrong in chasing that keyword?
I would also be interested in any long-tail searches for this ;)
Wonder where it'll showin google in a few days time. I'm telling you, there is a genuine potential in opening an seo office in Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu
Totally agree Brent but this is what negative press does to an industry, mud sticks and all that palava. Some of the best content generators online are SEO's, but even that won't get your site noticed.
As for his hard man talk at the end, well I'd even pay for his plane ticket to come and say that to my face ... heh, I've probably hit harder out the way to get to a fight ;-)
@sza - is this place not an information portal for online marketers et al? So, when a well known figurehead in the community opens up his blog for contributions from those trying to progress within the industry you turn around and denounce it as not being newsworthy - hah!
Gab is it just me or have you given many-a-wordpress-plugin developer time to hot foot into your marketing exposure.
Their is such a thing called keeping the wraps-on-things until your ready to release.
I understand pre-release tactics but this just seems slightly awkward instead of pre-planned.
Anyways, hope you get your release out quick enough before your excellent idea is too chewed to promote.
Think I'm with 'storyspinner' on this one, I've witnessed the attack of trolls first hand, applications aside it brings bad karma, and as someone politely put it 'don't piss in the pool you swim in'.
Cheers for the Sphinn Jeff
@ Dave, soz to bring back childhood memories but your a smart guy who always puts the right vibe on what you say and anybody that can put a smile on this grumpy face of mine is always at the top of my rss reader. :)
I before E, man english was never my great point ... update on its way Mr Thies.
Get a 404 error Kimota
Edit : got it now , so is it true that what I can tell from my own research that offline media claim they cannot afford to have every story checked out by researchers due to diminishing budgets or is that just another story ?
@ jill - for someone who supposedly heads the ethical stance on all things online seo / marketing you would expect a little bit more decorum - heck you'll be saying 'nuke them' next, very grown-up and considerate I must say.
Just stating the obvious Jill -- you set yourself up as some head figure for many to look up to.
You have to behave a certain way in the public eye ... you can't have it both ways now m'lady ;)
Aint pretty is it when someone asks you to behave a certain way - how does that medicine taste you've been trying to ram down my throat for the last week or so.
Wanna bet?
Nope! I'm only trying to offer some advice [alright in a condescending manner, I agree] yourself and others don't agree with me - that's cool, it happens.
I mean we all have different viewpoints in life how things should play out.

@Kimota -- LOL, hoisted by your own petard - better see a doctor about that mate, sounds dodgy. :)
I'm looking forward to your next post on this subject and I hope you have chosen wisely in your overall snapshot of contributers to your forthcoming piece.
I'm hoping a balance has been struck to show the very many voices that this debate has covered and your not just treading your journalistic talents down the anti-linkbait boardwalk - that my friend would be a tragedy not only to your talents as a modernday online JM Barrie but to some who have read your pieces of debate with great anticipation - although I may disagree with points you try to argue I am always prepared to give a voice of reason - like yourself - a chance to get your point across.
Harith no-one, I repeat no-one could have assessed the risks of this story beforehand ... this flies in the face of everything gone before. So, to make a statement like that before all the facts have been laid on the table is ... well its a lot of things except true.
It may be the case now when people want to use this tactic that they can be made aware of the worst case scenario but not before all this hulabaloo kicked off could you ever turn to a client and state
"We'll y'know this might go Global and Google might get pissed off a bit at you ... oh, and they'll be sections within the online media world decrying your site for publishing the story and as for myself, we'll I'll have groups call me a whore, liar and spit my name like some evil monster worse than Satan himself ... but them's the risks that go with creative story-telling ...eh? What's that? Where do you sign, just here ... good man you know it makes sense!"
This is taken from Digg about the 'Fake Story Apology' - shows somebody has a sense of humour :
"BS the retraction is fake. The kid is now using his dads credit card to hire a fancy New York City public relations firm to try to bury the story."
As quoted by Matt Cutts "But if someone is sloppy enough to get caught (or to admit!) making up a fake story"
Its that ol' devil called FUD again. Should we expect a 'Report a Fake Story' link in Google Webmaster Tools? Its a tough call.
For any SEO to comment on the tactics used as demonstrous or anything else likewise are forgetting what they do for a living ... they manipulate links to look natural. I'm utterly fed-up with the crap that has gone before ... who the feck are you to judge anyone for their skills to game the system when YOU do it everyday.
This is brilliant, watching those guys on Fox News was hilarious, Greg Proops quote "Nerds know how to party!" Awesome!
Here, Here @baiduyou.
The most important factor in all of this is that here we have established media sources failing to check up the facts of the story - plain and simple - if someone had done their job right it would never have snowballed to this scale.
Nice one Lyndon.
I think the only thing to come out of all this that I will seriously take on board is if your going to use this tactic then never let the cat out of the bag.
I have been floored by some of the comments I have seen written here, on blogs and elsewhere.
I respect the opinions of others to vent their views but to call Lyndon's article blackhat, spam, immoral etc ... is laughable.
Perhaps its because I'm from a place that says there is a big, dirty monster in a loch not far from here and watch the thousands buy into the Nessie story each year that I can see the humour in this.
I still think it was brilliant, absolute prank perfectionist. Lay your anger at the door of the media because there the ones that really duped the masses.
C'Mon Jill there is enough red flags in that story to keep a dozen Spanish matador's happy for some time. The only people I see here that could cause any sort of damage is the ones on some sort of 'crusade'.
I thought this would have been picked up better by sphinns seo community - anyway it was a great read Tim and deserved more eyeballs. :)
