Yes, very good point on being an active observer. I "skim" hot topics from time-to-time (when I have time), but I never really placed a lot of value to subscribing. You make a great case to do so.

Thanks for the insight!

Just now stumbled upon this artile (forgive the pun) but this is great. I especially like the highlighting of how successful marketers think differently from their audience in:

“You’re looking to make millions of dollars - I’m looking to make only $300.”

That really sums up a lot. Chip away at making a million by suckering in 33,333 at $300. :)

Nice article -even though I'm a little late on finding it!

Yeah, I applied for their publisher network and never got a response. Maybe no one works there any longer ... *cricket cricket*

In fact, I just posted in my forum a few days ago about this: "I was not approved for a Yahoo account for some reason. They gave no explanation and from what I've heard, they do not approve many people anyway. So, I don't recommend them to anyone simply because it seems to be a waste of time. In fact, I don't know HOW they are making any money with their ad network --seeing as how they ignore their potential customers and approve no one."

It's no wonder Google is running rampant with no one to stifle them.

"I do know that sites that rank in Google are percieved as trusted by many consumers.  How little they know :)" - wheel

That is SO true on both points!

I think it was just a coincidence that you PR dropped a point. Adding a no-followed link shouldn't make any difference. There is, of course, speculation that linking OUT to prominent sites will help boost your pagerank, but it can't matter for too long --because Google is practically telling everyone to stop linking without nofollow.

Another factor is that it takes quite a while for their algorithm to complete its processing and your recent change was most likely not taken into account for the latest updte.

Plus, it's been a trend for more than a year that all of the sites seem to be "equalizing" in PageRank anyway. Realistically, this is how it should've been all along. An average, somewhat popular blog should only be a 1, 2, or maybe 3 in any index. When considered next to sites that deserve an index of 5,6,7 or 8, it shouldn't be a typical blog. It should be cnn, amazon, or the likes. That's my humble opinion, anyway. ;)

The counter-argument to your idea that the value of a keyword domain going down due to unavailability is that it will go up because that keyword must be popular and whoever owned those keyword domains first must be more important.

Of course, we all know that isn't necessarily true in a world of domain-squatters and the like. However, it's just that it is all speculation at this point anyway. The `SEO` market -per se- is feeling more like trading `futures commodities` more and more each day.

As for weighting, I wouldn't think anyone would argue that a keyword in a domain is helpful. It's just a matter of, "how helpful?" It is probably helpful to the degree that META keywords are helpful, but keep in mind that the weighting is purposely changed from time to time anyway. One site with keywords could be on top today; gone tomorrow; and then back on top again in 3 months. :)

Good post. I was tetering on whether or not to use DKI, but seeing your results has re-sparked that desire to learn more about it and test it. I just don't know if it'll be worth it in my case -since my phrases targeted are a bit longer such as, "key word one two", and nothing will be replaced in the case that it doesn't fit, right?

I see the first link in your new post is:
http://ericadewolf.wordpress.com/2008/01/12/8-reasons-why-you-need-an-email-marketing-service-provider/

Did you write that article just for me?! j/k :)

Great post... I will definitely have to look at your other article on ESPs now and find out more about that. The extent of my research into that area so far was in testing Constant Contact -as you saw. However, I am very open to alternatives.

Thanks!

Yes, that's the key. I've been through quite a bit and lost my fortune, so money was an issue for the past year or so while I was rebuilding. However, now that I've gotten back on the upwards path again, I think it will be worth more to save time than to spend $50-$100 a month --not to mention getting that headache off my shoulders!

Thanks again. I set up a couples of demos with those two you highlighted.

That's interesting. But, I have several domains which I acquired for their expired traffic and I use 301 via htaccess to redirect. Those backlinks DO show in backlink searches for my sites. Why is that?

And, the 301 seems to work because the inbound links appear to be linked TO my site when they are -in fact- linked to the expired domain.

Good article. Spunn. ;P

I just noticed you submitted this article BEFORE I submitted mine. :)

I would've changed mine a bit -had I seen this first! ha

Very true. Even though I was one of StumbleUpon's first members and original advertiser, I didn't really jump on the social bandwagon. My loss, I see.

Now, I'm seeing that even though I'm arriving late to the party, I can get 200+ visits per article on the day I submit an article. I'll have to look into ShoutWire -since it's your favorite. :)

What I don't understand is why we didn't hear more lawsuits being filed against Google (and probably Yahoo too). I know with Google, I was frauded more than $400 in less than 4 days with a maximum per day budget of $20. You gotta love their "policies" but I was really irritated that a site with 2,00,000+ Alexa was able to earn $400 in impressions off of me in 4 days! I'm on the wrong side of the fence, I guess! lol

This issue appears to be dying down -as it should be- and I just wanted to add a quick note in there on free speech. This thread was so heated that I hesitate to even write in here but Harith's last comment got my wheels turning.

In my past, being "free and quick to speak my mind" has brought me a lot of hearthache over the years. However, when I look back, I would do it all over again. In fact, I built a fortune and lost a fortune as a result, but it's the principle of the matter. Principle is one of the few things that separates us apart from the common drones of society (but that's a much bigger topic... lol).

As someone fairly new to the whole "social media" scene, I can see both sides. What I see is that there is a very fine line between helping the community as a whole and making a buck. If you help the community AND make money; then did you really help the community? If so, then there's no harm done. In like fashion, if Dave and John both got some traffic but they helped enlightened, then there's probably no harm done. If either one did it purely for profit and didn't care about the effects, then it would be wrong. In this case, I don't know Danny but I doubt he would have written the article (to gain some traffic) if he didn't also think is was newsworthy for the industry. And conversely, I can understand how John might have felt heated in the mix, because of how the article came off.

Anyway, I digress.

I might as well throw in that while I am completely against the idea of nofollow (and wrote several articles such as "Who Will Clean Up Google's Mess?"), I use nofollow heavily on "some" of my sites...

A saying I once heard seems to apply best here, "It is what it is."

Cheers,

Wow. You can do all of that in just 2 hours?! ;)

Yeah, I'm stuck on LOST too (used to dis it for 2 years until I finally watched it!), but I hope the writer/network tiff doesn't cause us to miss out!!

Hah... good, entertaining article. :)

I built an automated website thumbnail generator that found "Ms. Dewey" one day, and we wasted  something like 2 or 3 hours there! hah. My best friend still uses her for entertainment --not for searching, though. That must say something.

But, since my blog is conspiracy related, I had to read your article. Spunn. ;)

I agree that the 404 needs to be done carefully -as it can cause other issues as well, if it doesn't return a true 404 header. However, the re-write rule does overcome that limitation.

As far as the Google Checkout, that's a great observation. Having something colorful on the listings definitely stands out. Thanks for pointing that out!

I have never looked into the ad networks -at least not beyond getting the $2/cpm mentioned by another commentor. After that, I never even bothered. But, it is good to see the recent new ad network options popping up. Maybe that will help to lower their margin in the favor of the publishers.

If I ever decide to look into this again, I now feel more prepared -as I do not usually look over the legal stuff so much. I will DEFINITELY read now that I know there are so many pitfalls! Great post.

Thank you,

Brandon
