Not being an "advanced SEO:, this is one of the best, most informative interviews I've ever read. Didn't notice the formatting issues that joehall mentions, because of the content.

"Reasons for getting involved with Non Profit Organizations" was a great article,  and timely for me,  but in the past month I've read 2 non-responses and 3 responses like this...
"Thank you for the kind offer, but our board will not allow us to participate in a venture such as this.  We appreciate it though.  All our best to you."
So what I'd like to see is a "HOW to get involved..." article.

Nice intro, but examples of specific free programs would be helpful, though.

I respectfully disagree. Novice bloggers on free platforms can start "business opportunities" for free any day that they choose, given adsense, affiliate products, and some time to kill. No, they may not get rich, but my ex-wife got us through some hard times with ebay and sometimes brought in more income than I did ($1000 profit on her best week, while I was unemployed and we were practically homeless.) All that your "lemonade stand" example demonstrates is that it takes creativity and aptitude, not money. It also demonstrates that along with these two qualities you need the right tools to manufacture your product.
So what do you need to do this online?
- Open Source Software or Freeware (I'm gradually getting into Linux. Not perfect, but it costs $0)
- A free website (ie blogger.com)
- A product that is free to you, (ebooks, dropshipping)
- A method to distribute said paid product (clickbank, ebay anyone?)
- A social network or advertising method (ebay auctions, forums, friends, coworkers, Organic SEO!!)
- A monetization strategy (adsense, affiliates, ebook authoring, paypal donations - etc)
- Combining all of these strategies and products is also a possibility.
- If the income coming in from the products are not utterly life-changing, then the money should be immediately reinvested in the business or in a business that requires a financial investment.

So seriously,  "starting a business opportunity for free" is not something you should frown upon.
Everyone should be encouraged to chase their dreams, especially if they have to start small.
For example:  http://www.lori.bionhosting.com/ needs donations to get back on her feet. She's my friend. And trust me, every little bit helps.

Shelley,
You've probably seen this before but I feel obligated to point it out, just in case -
Maki @ DoshDosh recently detailed a more authoritative and fleshed-out approach to what I mentioned above, if there's someone you want to pass it along to:

I'm new to the game and also new to Sphinn. Since the category I'm focusing on is extremely competitive, I am much more concerned with generating traffic than with manipulating Search engine rankings - if I were to focus on that then I would be competing with companies that can simply buy their way to the top or bowl me off of the search engines. Me? I'm with Brett. I will take the traffic wherever I can get it. I hope that the traffic flow effects my SE ranking, but I will be more dependent on viral marketing than anything else. And I am staying "whitehat" for the moment.

That would be interesting to see. Sounds like I should forget about Digg and focus on StumbleUpon.

My favorite quote: "In my view we all have a duty, as citizens of the web, to degrade the ad platforms’ ability to estimate click values.  Don’t use their tracking systems.  Don’t let them have conversion data.  Don’t just do this for yourself; do it for everyone.  Don’t let Google or Microsoft or Yahoo or anyone else know how much those clicks are worth.  It’s none of their business."

I like that idea. Then maybe small fish like me might have a better chance advertising in Googles search page. I can't afford the price of admission.

Thanks for the suggestion, it was very helpful. I've been doing similar math but hadn't thought of the subsidization angle. Very good idea.
