Especially critical for us to consider are the "age of links" factors that go into their algo. This is easy to overlook. It's a bit like topsoil and erosion. You must replentish it to keep things growing.
Google hates the long tail when selling Adwords, we all know that. We can exact match our way down to 0.05 bids and drive lumps of qualified traffic. It will be felt quickly if this "clusters" searches around suggest choices, nipping the tail off much earlier.
Story: What If It Isn't Linkworthy?
I run into this ALL THE TIME - People are still expecting magic SEO fairy-dust to be sprinkled on their website. I say: "Well, no... what we have to do is create content" ...and at that very second that it starts to sound like work/money/time, they stop listening - and begin daydreaming about that SEO spam they got the other day or the brother-in-law's-neighbor who can tweak your tags and get you #1 everywhere. People's minds are so clouded by the myths that those of us talking the real story often get sidelined.
Woo hoo!!!!!
...um, we only budgeted $40 though. Hope that'll work.
kthanksbye
For those of us who are independent or in very small agencies, this is a huge huge issue. It's probable that I'll miss all SMXs next year except advanced. Rising airfares, hotels, and conference costs will keep me stuck in this flyover state. I was going to three per year, but for 2009, it'll be one.
I tried to comment on the blog, but site errors prevented. it.
A PPC Writer. What I mean is that the same person writing the ads should probably be involved in the landing page and the offer itself. Through connections with the testing process, they can weave nuance into the sales funnel. This tends to merge into a specific skill set that is overlapped between PPC mgr and writer.
The PPC person will also have a sense of competition, and what's working for them. By spying on ads that competitors are using, you can learn a lot. Writers probably are not using these rather geeky tools. At least in my experience.
Long tail ad campaigns require quite a bit of dynamically changing ads, which requires special skills acquired after a lot of experience in PPC... particularly how exact/phrase/broad matching and different distribution models work.
Lastly, PPC persons are usually much closer to the analytics and much more in tune with what the metrics mean. Often a simple copywriting change can have dramatic impact, and this can be somewhat predicted by knowing previous data.
Hmmm. I sphunn Twelllo over an hour before this one...

Is Sphinn's search tool not working?
When I originally posted about this, I named it "bondo" for site design errors. I linked...You should see a trackback.
I think breaking apart content, plotted against these curves, in a drill-down fashion will always be the best method.
Story: 25 Years in Usability
I consider the usabilty industry to be one of the most critical aspects of today's search marketing industry. Post-click behaviors/perfornance are what matters once SEO/SEM does its thing.
Story: New Google AdWords Video Ads
Already preparing clients for this now. Snap video cameras now entering my list of required expenses for a company. Paid Search + Video has never been so closely coupled as this.
I've seen people use this to hide under the trademark radar, too - via keyword insertion and geotargeting.
Sphunn..What's missing from this article is the discussion about using testing as a design tool - sort of in a wisdom-of-crowds type of way. Multivariate testing helps not only improve conversions but design for the "true" audience. At least the ones who could find you.
Sphunn.. Saw this earlier. If done right, this could become the largest network of its kind and give Yahoo! a new advantage with lots of possibilities. Google has no answer for this right now - and it's possible that Y! could bring back significant market share in search by morphing user-contributed search finds with its organic results.
wow, wildcard certs have been available for a while. it would seem, considering google's use of subdomains, a good idea.
My entire business is based on this philosophy. It makes me ZERO friends among the ego-designer crowd.
Story: NoFollow: An SEO Red Flag?
I realize I could put a wireless network card in my pc and use the 3G network wherever I am, I tried one of those cards and it worked like a fast analog modem - not fast enough for me to use seriously, especially when I use VOIP w/my laptop sometimes. I plan to use my 3G Ipod (Q2 08, rumor has it) with a USB cable when wifi is not available. Still, a G-level Wifi on DSL or T1 will still leave it in dust.

I'd drive from Lexington (KY) - only 6h - depends on time of year though.
I'd spend time in Asheville on the way home.
