How is it spamming to place a link in your bio to a page of relevance to your background?  Another ridiculous move by Google to prevent people from promoting themselves.

Dana & Pete - Thanks for the feedback.  It's a lot to bite off at once and probably more of a guide than your typical blog post, but I have to agree there is a ton of strong, actionable information in there.

Just to make sure my use of VENERABLE was taken in the right context, I was referring to the definition:

"...commanding respect because of impressive dignity; worthy of veneration or reverence, because of noble character

as opposed to the way I would use the word if I were referring to Larry King:

"...older than dirt

On a separate note, I wanted to let Ms. Fontenot know that I received a Telegram from Senator John McCain:

A great nation owes a debt of gratitude to Ms. Donna Fontenot for four years of creatility and venerabosity"

What can I say?  Wow.

David -  This has "Local SEO SEMMY Award" written all over it.  I am quite impressed.  Clearly, you and each of the contributors put a great deal of effort into this.  Magnificent work!  Bravo.

@Michelle and PixelBella-

You're both female chauvinist pigs and I'm highly offended!!!! ;)

I think I'm going to have to write a blog post on this comment thread.  Too much good material to ignore.  I will comment on this though:

"So, is Twitter's 140-character limit more suited to men and thus helps build friendship easier?"

That's correct. The 140 character limit provides the framework for back and forth dialogue that promotes an actual two-way conversation, thus negating the stereoptypical female's predilection toward dominating the conversation.  In doing so, Twitter opens the door to better communication between men and women through duologue, as opposed to the soliloquies we have become accustomed to listening to.  Or not. ;)

BTW - you two remind me of that old Beatles' song:

Michelle ma Pixelbelle,
Sont les Mots qui vont tres bien ensemble
Tres bien ensemble.
That’s all I want to say...

:)

As many know, I'm a great supporter of all things SEOmoz, however I have to ardently agree with and support the comments of Lisa and Michael on this one.  Lisa "framed" her presentation with a very strong and positive disclaimer for the show, the speakers, etc.

What she decided would be the focus of her article was that which she found OUT OF THE ORDINARY, which is what most keen journalists will do.

Even Danny Sullivan had the candor to state that the show was far more blackhat than he woudl have liked to have seen.

That said, Rand - your DeSphinn comment, your comments here, and your additional commentary on the SEOmoz blog, come across like this.

There are many lessons here and it is quite a refreshing departure from the norm.  I like this post - a lot.

"That was where there was a willingness for people to be duped."

@Kimota - there was a willingness - in fact a desire, for people to be duped from the onset.  I can't believe that all of a sudden, a relatively significant percentage of this community has turned into a bunch of holier than thou's over this because a great many people (including "reputable" news sources), may have been ignorant enough to believe it and run with it - without asking the singular question "Is this true?"  Read the story again - tell me you couldn't see right through it.

The father, a lawyer said he had been too busy, but would take him on a surprise trip to Disneyland instead.

Asked why he ordered two escorts, Ralph said he thought it was the thing to do when you win a "World of Warcraft" tournament. They told the suspicious working girls they were people of restricted growth working with a traveling circus, and as State law does not allow those with disabilities to be discriminated against they had no right to refuse them.

FoxNews ran with this as truth?  Are you kidding me?  Do you think they didn't know it was satirical?  Do you have any idea what they need to go through before running with a SERIOUS story?  They knew darn well it wasn't true and they ran with it because it made for good tv.

I'm predicting money.co.uk weathers this little storm and picks up another 5,000 links or so on the backlash.

I thought this was rather good for a few laughs.  It wouldn't take a genius to figure out, by how the story was written, that it was satire.  The fact that other reliable news sources reported on it - most notably FoxNews, is a testament to some people's willingness (and desire), to run with a story with an "ignorance is bliss" attitude, simply because it makes for good radio or TV, etc.  FoxNews could have easily asked one simple question to Money if they cared: "Is this a true story?  Clearly they didn't do that - perhaps because they didn't want to lose their headline of the week.

For those that are getting in a huff about this, I think you're going a bit overboard.  Do you have any idea how much of the World's News is either fake, massaged, etc.?  This is a satire story about a 13 year old boy hiring hookers to play Halo.  It's not like a President of some country falsely accusing and them bombing another country for having weapons of mass destruction only to find out if they had done their homework up front they could have avoided it. (God forbid that should ever happen).

This tactic may be a one horse pony for the money.co.uk site, but it appears to me that in one feel swoop - this one horse pony won the Kentucky Derby.  That's a good pony to ride.  I have no problem with it.  No one got hurt, many got a good laugh and Lyndon delivered his April Fools joke a bit late.  Timing is everything.

On a final note, for what it's worth, I live in Texas and I know that kid.  He lives in my neighborhood. There are a thousand just like him.  ;)

On one final note, have the commenters on this thread even seen the FoxNews video?

http://tinyurl.com/5qwkot (tiny url force of habit compliments of twitter)

These guys are obviously having fun with the story.  Do you really believe they thought it was true?  C'mon people.  If it's okay for a news organization to run with something like this that they know is a fabrication, why are all of you getting so upset about it?  Lighten up.

Bill, I don't know if I accept your statement that the average search marketer does not "get" social media.  Rather I woudl say, many simply choose not to participate at the level of frequency required to garner real results and instead choose alternative means for marketing themselves and their clients.

An excellent post - and the writer provides a PDF download to boot.  Covers everything from important HTML tags to search engine indexing limits, recommended title tag syntax, common canonical issues, 301 Redirect code, important search engine robot user agents, etc.  All in a handy neat reference sheet that you can plaster to your white board.  Nice job on this one Danny.

@ James - That's why there's a topic called "water cooler" in which this post was properly recorded.  Ann Smarty has many friends here and when "one of our own", is absent for awhile, it's nice to read news that she's doing well.

An amusing attempt by an individual that is going to get absolutely nowhere with this effort and is wasting both time and money in the process.

There are as many definitions of "the SEO process", as there are SEO's.

@ kevin - no offense to Danny.  Believe me.

I brought this subject up several months ago and considering that this a predominantly search industry related site, one would assume that it could taken care of pretty easily.  It's a great annoyance, as is the general latency of the site.  All of this can be cured in relatively quick fashion.

Gee,  Here's an article by Search Engine Land published July 11th, 2002, entitled 131 (Legitimate Link Building Strategies), with contributions from several different authors.

Is there some sort of statute of limitations on this stuff?  Stoney, as you well know, the uniqueness in this case isn't in the topic - it's in the response to the question.

That said - I'm glad it brought attention to the document you prepared.  Good stuff!

Great comments Matt.  Generally speaking, I think you'd be hard-pressed to see people desphinning an "SEOstar", but fortunately that's the least of the problems.  Usually their stuff is pretty good.

Glad the Desphinns are @ 1:1.  Personally, I'd like to see a 2:1 on the hot topics.
