I agree with the above - client work in my experience (SEO) it's all about billable hours and comes with stress, but also a buzz.

In-house is certainly more relaxed and you dip into many other roles which can be interesting.

Obviously a lot of time has gone into this and it's presented good advice in a nice useful format, congrats!

Thanks - I was aware of the outgoing clicks measurement tracking but had not thought about using it on banners. Will be very useful for one of my clients in measuring the quality of traffic from SEO/PPC.

Wow... this tool looks really useul and pretty accurate. Make sure you have it on exact match if you are using it for SEO.

I suspect it is the same as AdWords impressions share which combines SEO and PPC searches (I think) e.g. the reach. I am looking at some heavy volume UK brand searches and there is a shorfall from what Google is reporting by about 20% - however I have not segmented the analytics by UK.

When I look at the world (heavy volume) brand searches there is a shortfall of less than 10%. I have done this for a couple of sites that get over 10,000 brand searches a month and so far I am very impressed.

I agree to a fair extent, but what about the keywords that assit in the buying cycle? You know, not the last referring keywords... the ones that find the searcher before they come back on brand or something similar. I don't think AdWords conversion tracking will help you with that? Or am I missing something?

I am not so sure it's good - I submitted a similar article yesterday and have to agree with  g1smd's response:

Now is my bank barclays.com or barclays.co.uk or bank.barclays or barclays.bank?

Actually its my card details I need to access, maybe that is barclays.cc or barclays.card or barclay.card or barclays.credcard or barclays.visa or creditcard.barclays or cc.barclays or cc.barclays.bank or something else?

Which of those is the phishing site?

This is a BAD MOVE.  ICANN are doing this for the MONEY not for any benefit to the users of the internet.

Don't give me that crap about running out of domain names. That's garbage. If the existing namespace were better managed there would be plenty to go round.

Ok lessons have been learned from this, although I can't help but chuckle at the last couple of paragraphs and that folks thought it was real. It's not as if it ended on a serious note:

Ralph's ambition is to one day become a politician.

Has anyone used this Digg Stalker or this Digg Watcher? - they both look pretty cool, although I am not a big Digger so haven't given them a proper 'Sphinn'!

I posted about their aggresive cold calls at the beginning of last year. I can't believe they carried on trading as Internet Advancement with all the bad press being written about them. They were real slime balls - let's hope that is the end of them!

I posted a 'web2.0 consulting' youtube video last week that got flagged up as SPAM within 5 minutes. I was impressed by the turnaround, although IMO it wasn't spam - just light humour that some may have found funny. It got boring after about 20 secs, so maybe it was kinda stupid but not spammy!

Another concern that I have that I don't think has been discussed is the conflict of interest in asking a client to review your agency and knowing that SEMCompare exists.

A positive review is great, but exposure to your compeitiion is not so.

3,338 diggs in 4 days is incredible, although when mainstream hits digg, I suspect it doesn't feel so incredible!

I agree, I am not sure any rules were broken - rather a question asked, do you like Pink Floyd and are they still cool? 3,338 diggs in 4 days suggests to me that lots of people have heard of Pink Floyd, have listened to Pink floyd and think that they are still cool. Not many other b(r)ands could pull it off, but not other b(r)ands have such positive world wide appeal. 40 years of being cool, who else could could pull that off? Umm, the Rolling Stones.... ummm... ?? If this sounds like data mining , then it probably is, intentioanlly or unintentional- 3,338 geeks think Pink Floyd are still cool and are happy to say so. So shucks, I agree that selling popular items with expensive, quality and thoughtful design works.

Very well explained and great use of images.

I find that the majority of client work involves optimising existing sites, existing url naming conventions and existing internal linking. So you often have a messy structure to begin with.

I have often wandered whether there is a tool that can be used to give you an idea of the internal linking structure of a site to give you the heads up on a site's information archetecture and anchor text. Something that you could export to excel and then start the process of mapping out keyword reserach/selection to existing pages and see gaps for pages that do not exist.

There are lots of backlinking tools - does anyone know of any internal linking tools?

I have found some joy using html site generators and using Google Webmaster's internal linking tools (only sample data) to help with optimising a site for internal linking and keyword mapping, but they did not quite hot the spot....

Am I being lazy or is there an opportunity for a great tool being built?
