@snoskred, sorry shouldn't have posted here since it seems to work for others, and should have tried in FF. I do love the idea and will retry at home.

Now that this went hot I doubt spammers will even see it since they spend most thier time in the what's new section. Shouldn't this be sticky there somehow?

it's all about perception folks and apparently hooley is perceived as a party animal who can get kicked out of bars and close em down all in one fell swoop. so put up or shut up as they say (I'm gonna sit, back, drink my shirley temples and watch, lol)

I just hope developers read this whole article and don't assume that their prayers have been answered or they could go with Donkey's suggestion.

Actually I like this title better because it sets expectations with the word 'improves'.

Nice article Lid but title is not even close. Hardly how to be an seo rock star. More like how to be an seo groupie. ;)

Okay this is starting to become clearer since you included specific examples.   I admire you for taking this on and leading the charge for standards and hope others as able as yourself can/will contribute.

This is all well and good and Ian does a great job of defining standards but what I would like to see is some examples of seo standards. In all this debate there is not one single example of what an seo standard would look like. The reason, I fear, is that if anyone attempts to write one, that will create be a debate within a debate. This would indicate that there can't be standards based on Ian's definition until there is agreement: Standards = Documented agreement on specifications, rules and norms.

Let's see, an evil green monkey, a guy that covers weird asia news and an seo fat fighter (and a poor one at that). Wow, we are indeed a strange group of people in the seo world and our moderators the strangest. Congrats gentlemen, now moderate away!

You think the guy would spend his time in a more productive mode like fixing his website, yikes!

It's even worse here in Asia when managing PPC means buying more keywords and not optimizing the ones you have. No way I would copy the competition or follow Fred into the lake. But then again, I would marry Angelina.

Could someone please give me a few examples of an seo standard and then tell me who is going to agree on them let alone read them. Sure there are standards for other industries as everyone points out but do you really think the average consumer reads or even knows about those standards? I'm not against standards and I sure woudn't debate the idea with the likes of Chris Boggs, Lisa Barone or Ian McAnerin. I'm just pragmatic and don't see this industry ever agreeing on anything, let alone standards. But I still want to see a few examples of seo standards. How about starting with a standard for no follow ;).

I don't think you can compare travel and restaurant reviews with reviews of sem agencies. It's a totally different scale, millions of people travel and eat and can provide feedback but how many people use sem companies and how many will post reviews.

This system is totally open for abuse and will be abused. It's too bad cause I really like these guys and have contributed to SMS in the past. I would advise anyone in the system to flood it with positive reviews by your clients just in case someone writes or fakes a bad one.

@jill, that award site is a joke but I wonder how many companies base their decisions on those ratings. They look pretty impressive. They even claim to talk to clients and I know for sure there's no way they did.

IMHO there is no way to set standards in an industry that is so new and constantly changing. Do you really think Google and the other search engine can set standards? Don't you think the webaster guidelines are already standards and they change the standards regularly based on what they think makes them better (or more money). Nofollow paid links is nothing more than, "don't buy links from them, buy them from us". We don't need no stinkin' standards!

@emanuel, You're right,  we don't have the right to call those who can bring a site to #1 in Google for every keyword Bad SEO Firms, but we sure have the right to say firms that say they can are bad.

Directly from Google: No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.

If you're talking about paid search, you can't even guarantee that, due to the ad quality score, besides Eric is talking about seo. Please don't tell people you can bring a site to #1 in Google for every keyword, it makes the rest of us look bad.
