snarky
with comments like "Touche, well put" and "Geez" you'll both catch up soon enough. :)
I'm glad to hear that SES will be "less focused on social media and geared more for corporate types than hard-core SEOs" - to quote Marty's post.
That is exactly the right direction. Let the others chase the latest carrots - SES should be more about training: practical usage, techniques, strategies and tactics - as it was when it began.
It's an interesting story, but is $6k really good money for 4-5 months of work?
At that pace, if it was a full-time effort, you'd basically earn at poverty level for your time.
@MattCutts - Argh!
If you think that site was a joke then you don't really understand what some of us go through. Some of us don't want to violate your rules by paying for links... so either we violate your rules and do so (I don't) or we spend time on our on-site optimization (while gaining links naturally over time)... Often, yes, that means you need to do things for search engines rather than for users like repeating words within links, titles, etc... you have to balance that with user experience, of course, but if the site is operating in a competitive environment it's a must (assuming that your competitors are buying links and you aren't)...
Damn, I'd rather hear you express your appreciation for this person's "joke" rather than consider it a joke outright - despite that it was certainly humorous... the truth often is.
Peter: I would just ask how is Jason Calacanis relevant to the discussion being held the rest of the week. To my knowledge he's never participated in local marketing or local SEM and still isn't with Mahalo.
And your link doesn't work. The end-of-sentence period broke it.
There was some interesting debate recently about "outing" other sites for selling links and such.

Maybe "outing" sites for bad Metas isn't the same topic, but...
Maybe take Neil Patel's advice and "start talking shit" directly to the big company instead? http://sphinn.com/story/8169 Maybe they'd listen and hire you rather than get pissed when they see your blog post.
Prize sucks - who would want to go to Lithuania?
It doesn't count as negative if you're making stuff up and smiling when you say it!
Story: How Search Engines Work
What does Kosmix have to do with it? I'd prefer to see a post about Kosmix OR a post about how search engines work.
Otherwise this appears like its link bait on their behalf. The latter part of the article was well written, but didn't hve enough to do with the intro to convince me otherwise.
Umm, but isn't that what an editor is for? To bring the suggestions that readers feel strongest about to the publisher's attention??
:)
btw - I'm glad there is a full-timer here (on Sundays even) so welcome aboard!
