Well I will play off the narsasistic approach and looked for my name which there are many people on the web with my name - a professional musician, illustrator, religious fanatic, and of course internet guy and nothing for any of us. What is even more laughable is the predictive text feature even suggested my own name and still didn't return a result. Maybe better once they figure out how to write a better algo, I will come back and play later next month if it still around.
@SearchCommander - Alright good point, I am definetly not in the frame of mind for April Fools jokes. To early in the morning, got sucked in.
I hope you are kidding about adding value to the community by telling people to hide text on their web pages or by creating doorway pages.
Now I take this directly from Google Webmaster Guidelines.
1) Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
2) Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
And this from Yahoo Webmaster Guidelines.
1) Pages dedicated to directing the user to another page (doorway pages)
2) The use of text or links hidden from the user
Good idea to setup a Google Alert to catch porn injection in action. I am going to set this up immediately to add another layer of protection.
I can't wait to see part 2, i am always on the look out for a good IE6 workaround.
We have been using a similiar technique for about a year now, it has allowed our design and seo teams to get along. SEO having been concerned about not having actual text in a h tag and Design not wanting to stick to safe fonts.
From an automation standpoint, I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to conceptualize any SEO technique within a CMS system. There are a few basic areas that can not be missed. Every page should have the ability to have the following unique items: Title Tag, Meta Description, Meta Keyword, alt tags, and body content. If you also have the ability to create links within the body content that will also be a benefit.
If you would like to have someone look it over from an SEO end user perspective drop me a line. I can tell you I have had several clients in the past that have been burned by so called optimizable CMS applications or extremely hard to use systems.
I have to admit I have swayed away from using the feature myself for the lack of visual response to the total sphinn vote. That and also it gives the impression that it doesn't mean anything to use it. I don't know about anyone else but I haven't seen any type of abuse with the button so giving it extra weight like 1:1 or greater wouldn't be a detriment to the sites integrity.
For as long as we have been in the PPC business we have had a few clients that had been adamant about not buying their own name. They were in the top 2 spots in the big three engines and they didn't feel it was necessary to buy their own name. We quickly saw their acquistions drop by 70%, once a month went buy they were quick to come back and say maybe it wasn't such a good idea.
I have to say something like this is very enticing in a competitive marketplace but we have to have ethics and morality. I have clients all the time that want to rank for their competitors name and I have to tell them I am not willing to do this. If I lose them as a customer because of this then that is better for me at the end of the day than knowing that I have performed a service that is causing a moral dilemma.
Story: To Charge or Not to Charge?
What really bothers me about this type of scenario is what do you do when they go through a complete redeisgn of their website. This would include changing URL strings, then maybe added query strings to the mix. Do you go about your business reoptimizing the entire site and no additional setup cost. Or better yet what happens when their FTP information expires and they take 3 months to getting around to getting you new information.
This is the best part of the whole article.
Before you publish such attacks on one another, have a little think about what a person new to the industry might think if reading such rubbish.
I agree g1smd there is a lot of work ahead of us to clean up the bad things that are happening.
Story: Shoemoney, That Really Sucks
For years I have been battling the opinions of others over SEO and its benefits. What I am tired of are the people in our industry that many of the previous comments refer. The ones who think they know what they are doing and then piss off 100 people(clients) and they tell 10 people each and then we have a witch hunt going against our profession. Our sales team doesn't have a week go by where they talk to someone that has the sentiment of hatred towards SEO/SEM.
My problem with these types of blog posts are that anyone can make up a number "95%" and then right about something because they are pissed off. Now if Shoemoney didn't have such a shocking title would any of us read his article. If it stated "Why I do not like 10% of SEO Experts", there wouldn't have been a reason for me to open it up in my reader.
All we can do is vent a little to our friends. Hope that this rant want get a lot of placement in the SERPs. So lets just stop linking to it brush it under the rug. And chalk it to him having his monthly dude PMS.
I can say I break the second reason all the time, I didn't want to take the time to add any type of picture to my posts. I am going to go back through later and update my posts.
Congratulations to all the Sphinners of the world as without everyone helping out to make this a great community they would have not been able to do this. I do love this place.
I still can't believe this MSNBC guy opened his big mouth, as all that came out is crap. He definitely not a Sphinn reader as if he were would truly be able to understand that there are benifits to all/most of the items on his truly spell binding list.
Story: No More WWW
I don't know if I completely agree with this one. When it comes to the infamous URL, I think to myself; We have spent years hammering www. into peoples minds as a necesity of a web address. Now I know that we are an online community of experts and understand the world of the A record and if we feel like it we can leave of the www. from the address and 99.9% of the time still get the website we want. When I talk with my parents about a new website I want them to go to, they always think it should start with www. so when I tell them not to put it in the address they get confused. Those are the two people I think about when working with the web, how would they understand the process and would they be able to handle it. I think it is reassuring to them when they see the www. and then they know this is a website address.
Congratulations - It is amazing how far the site has come in a years time. I look forward to seeing you guys turn two.
I don't know about their texting service but if it is like their online guide that I used yesterday than I feel sorry for those people who have to pay for each text message they receive. The results were not what I would have been anticipating. I received many third party spammy looking websites, nothing I would spend any money on.
I personally liked - "more anemic than a hemophiliac vampire" - but there is a very valid point to be successful in social media you need support from others. You could be the best writer in the world but since no one really knows about you, then no one is going to buy your books.
