@spostareduro NP, I submited becuase I agree with many of your points. The whole Sphinn eco system is screwed up, from spam hitting front page, to duplicate articles showing right ontop of 1 another for almost a full day, to things being pulled with no notice, etc, etc.
Everyone is concentrating on the one point of spam hitting "whats hot", but I think your post discussed various important points besides the spam.
I used to use Sphinn everyday, but becuase of this and the mob mentality of Sphinning things just becuase they recognize the avatar next to it, turned me off.
I still use it, and enjoy many of the great submissions, but I lost the passion I once had for it. It's not an attack on Sphinn, the mods, or the users. Just an observation that the aggregate of its parts is out of whack.
It reminds me of an old saying " dont shit where you eat!"
the truth is the journalists, bloggers, seo's , smm's and everyone else is just upset becuase this exposes their own naivety. sorry, but its true!! Dont hate the player, hate the game;)
What is the uproar about? probably just mad becuase they didnt think it up, its freaking genius. Period. Shame on the news outlets, they are the ones that should be getting heat.. but somehow that is being overlooked. if he would have hacked his way to news outlets displaying his article, or forced them in some way. But the reality is, that it was their appetite for sensationalism that got the best of them end of story!
Its easy for some to sit back and critisize tactics from the sidelines.
@kimota "SEO's image took a major hit" LOL are you serious from who? Jason Calcanis!! also regarding comment about "Then by your own argument, you aren't hoping they will link to you."
cmon , as marketer you should know that not every single thing you try works, so that it worked cannot be used as a rebutal or as a counter point ..
actually they are monitoring everyone on twitter
I posted on twitter yesterday that I had problems with comcast to test if they were really there, and in 10 minutes I got e response. See links below

Great Post Bill!
I can honestly say that I always learn something when I read your posts. Keep it up!
Geez! everyone is so touchy! reminds me of my 2 daughters when they argue, "no you did it", "no you did it", its a dam mistake, or a mix up, or whatever. Not the end of the world.
and although it makes no diffrence now! I also think Matt crossed the line. He is saying that Marty put Lee on blast. Well your putting Marty on blast. What's the difference. ?
The difference is, as a moderator, how are you going to come on here and throw your weight around, becuase you have the power to delete a posting. and on top of it, to take such a nasty tone.
"Please skip the "the post went hot entirely on its own" stuff." Seems like some sorta sour grapes to me.
Seems like alot of playa hating and its quite sad!
oh! and also , seems like someone is just mad, cuz marty can submit a picture of dig poop and it goes hot! Dont hate the player hate the game =)
I wonder if there are different amount of sphinns required for different users? Seems like that!
yes, I have encountered the same problem where my posts require 24 sphinns. Whats up with that?
@ Bill , my pleasure. It is a fantasticly in depth post, chock full of info.
@mattmcgee - thanks for the thoughtful post providing us a glimpse into the mind of a Sphinn mod =) I found it very useful!
Wow! It seems this is the hot topic lately, how everyone hates to be shouted at , poked, invited to be a zombie, or to sphinn something. Whats up with that?
Maybe we can make a do not shout out list, something like the do not call list. That seems to work very well! =) right?
Thank you for starting this dialogue Marty! And Andy for being on his game and submitting it super fast!
I agree mostly with the point that one can easily dilute or marginalize ones brand or message, by acting like a sphinn junkie, panhandling in the back alleys of the web for sphinns or digs or whatever!
And yes especially here @ Sphinn. I mean I thought that the whole point was to create a community, where we can all find useful and relevant information on our industry. NOT, to try and play the players. That defeats the whole point, and furthermore also dilutes the quality of the community. Not only by promoting crappy content, but my encouraging others to do the same and see Sphinn as just another Social Media vehicle to exploit.
And to be clear I’m not saying I haven’t exploited Social Media, but there are conscious methods to go about doing so, which don’t dilute or take away from the integrity of a community. And there are blatantly mindless methods, which only hurt and decay a community.
It has never even crossed my mind to out right ask someone to sphinn or digg something of mine, or even that I’ve submitted. Granted, I’m not on the Hot Spinners anymore! But oh well! Everything in life is impermanent right?
