storyspinner
and people wonder why we get such a "bad name" by the true social media community
social media is about conversations... with REAL people..... not bots, not avatars and not spam
when SEO's create these types of applications, just to "game" the system (whether or not every single one is gamed or not) .... we get the stigma of being the sheisters, and snake oil salesmen not to mention spammers.
sad thing is, is that for all the time you spend building things that "game" social media, you could spend that time building relationships with cosumers that gain you so much more than just LINKS.
But hey... y'all keep making those applications that "game" the social media places, and then pissing the people off in those channels and making them hate your clients..... More power too ya! :)
I'll be happy taking those clients who truly want to use social media for engagements and building relationships
I really really.... hate the whale, more than I hate Plurk's A.D.D. type sucky interface. :(
Lee ... maybe my email to you hit your spam box? I know I sent one to you ... seems to be a problem with me lately (emails hitting folks spam boxes) :(
Thanks for sphinning this y'all .... this is such a great story, and a great cause, i really wanted to bring some light to it and maybe help them out. What better way than to show how they are using online marketing to raise funds in such a unique way! :)
Matt's presentation on the pyramid just rocked :) Gooooooo Matt! :)
(and no i'm not sucking up after I dumped cake on his shirt LOL)
This Title should be changed to read "SEOMoz Competitor Busted....." or "SEO Agengcy Busted...."
Good article, Bad Title.... so I'm just going to comment neither sphinn nor desphinn.
Rebecca - because if you read the article, Kevin points out that SEO Moz (i.e. Rand) has been quoted several times about this particular company and it is inferred that they are competitors. Most people also didn't get the SEO "Mos Def" .. and actually thought it was SEOMoz he was referring to - clarifying that would make more sense.
does it show my age that I even still remember that interface and used it often?! LOL
Ummm wow, I go off to train a client and I missed this.
Guys, the turn off is... everyone sniping in public in both blantant and sublte ways. I'm not saying we all hold hands and sing kumby-ya .... but maybe for a week, maybe we could just all call a truce?
i'm going to take a huge step here, put my head on the chopping block so to speak - but these communities (sphinn, twitter, even company blogs) isn't the place for it, could you maybe take this private?
Also just to clarify a few things here:
1) I didn't write this story, my blogger Brian Cosgrove did.
2) While I didn't write the story, I did speak on the panel (that was part 1 of the 4 part series)
3) I'm more than 2 or 3 "hats" - I speak at a lot more than just these events. There's a bigger world than just search, laying claim to us is really kind of silly - my Ren Fair friends might be jealous, they claim me as theirs too (and guys.... they carry swords and sheilds).
4) Danny votes up a lot of SMG stories whether they are related to his conference or to others, Danny's probably the fairest person on Sphinn. You don't need to bribe Danny - if he thinks its a good story he casts his sphinn, I've never seen him hold a grudge in this manner.
I like all of you (just like I'm sure everyone else does). I owe Danny the world, I respect all the Kevin(s) and really enjoy spending time at conferences with them. Could we just get you all to call each other out in private, because this is how those false accusations and rumors start.
great post by daven :)
and that's just not the DaveN FanGirl Speaking!

*tries to scratch away Nick's great question from public view* EMAIL that to me Nick! LOL
Marty - you read my post, about "why JC for a third time", I feel the same way. Although Danny didn't give him an entire cakewalk, I don't think he expected Jason to be such a jerk either. The people from Kelsey group had not clue either what a jerk he could be, until perhaps a 1/2 hour before he went on when I told the AV guys, "watch out for the F bombs" (and they thought I was kidding!)
I think as a whole, as a community we can ask some decent questions. I think this is actually a good chance for us to stop sitting back and complaining about how he's more like the "Snake Oil Salesman", truly manipulating search with Mahalo. This is where we can ask the questions that need to be asked - come on, I know you got a few!
Oh and just to clarify - SMG is only collecting the questions, Kevin, is going to be actually ASKING them. :)
OMG Michael, you're such a dork :P
i think all you guys are just jealous of his hair :P
I'm also one of those people who was intereviewed for the book, and I was so floored and honored by being asked to do the interview. Michael Miller emailed me and asked if I was interested. I never lobbied to be interviewed. I don't think anyone in the book lobbied, everyone was just asked.
I actually had no clue who else would be in the book - so I kept quiet (except to my mom and Christine Churchill) about it. When I got the press release and found out who else was in it, I was floored, and humbled that I was included with some of the people like Greg, Heather and Jill who've I've looked up to for so many years.
I don't consider myself a "hero" by any means. Like Eric, I believe heros are folks like my Dad, and Uncle, my neighbor who fights in Afghanistan, my friend who serves tirelessly to help the blind. Those are true heros.
I actually feel sorry for you, Sam, that you felt compelled to be so mean and write such a sensational description. Every person in the book is someone who has felt so compelled to give back to the industry that maybe that's why Michael chose them. We write, we speak, we will stop and reply to an email if we can help out ... we all give back. None of my colleagues really deserved that slap, instead they should be applauded for the tireless hours of great contributions they give back to the industry.
*sneaks over to torka's computer and installs thwirl.. and sends her tweets*
While he didn't visit us (SMG), he did grace the charity bash in nyc at SMX Social, and showed off that very 'hawt' tank top. LOL
have to say - the best information i get is from people who aren't even involved in the SEO Realm - folks like Shel Isreal, Jeremy Owang, Geoff Livingston, just to name a few.... not to say my SEO friends aren't informative, but what twitter gives you is the opportunity to reach out and know people in industries that touch ours........ gives a wonderful perspective!
If i have one tip - it's don't limit yourself to just people in this industry ... branch out and follow someone who might know what search optimization is, but doesn't necessarily include it as the #1 incomer earner in their portfolio :)
You really need to use it, to understand it's full potential. Build out your network and pay attention. Twitter can be a fantastic resource if used and implemented properly by businesses.
NY Times, SEL, Techmeme and ESPN feed out their latest news stories (this is PUSH technology, not PULL like and RSS reader), I know what's out there as it appears on the site and click on what I want to read - not sort through the stuff I don't.
Companies like Woot put out their daily specials - I bought my Roomba because of Woot's tweet on twitter.
Politicians are using it to announce rallies, or special events on their sites or blogs (Ron Paul/ Barack Obama) - before Thompson dropped out he used to to announce he was doing live blogging.
Sure there's a lot of small banter that goes back and forth, but there's also a lot of information you can pick up! I found out about a bunch of tech stuff going on in the philly area because of Twitter (podcamp, indy hall, etc.)
It's like any other "medium" unless you invest a little time into understanding it - you just won't get it. Totally fine if you can't invest the time or it's not your thing, but don't diss it before you can really say you've invested time into it,
