This is a pretty darn awesome tool so far, and I'll echo Chris Bennett to say that the guys there are *extremely* receptive to feedback and there's an almost instantaneous turnaround on feature requests! :) w00t!
tamar: I thought you belonged to the Schwag UPS Club - prepaid overnight delivery from all the conferences?
Not yet. That would be nice, though!
"Among the little notes they included was that 2.3 would no longer be supported. It’s something I hadn’t mentioned when I blogged about it in the past, but it’s something that is important when you have a large userbase."
To be fair to WordPress, I work for one of Technorati's top 10 blogs and we were able to upgrade to WP 2.5 from 2.3 without any problems. I understand you have a huge userbase but the upgrade shouldn't be an issue. I also think that the WordPress team was rather confident in their upgrade that they considered it not to be problematic. Maybe they are being short-sighted, though.
However, all in all, this is a well-researched post (especially with regards to all the blog posts you added on the bottom that indicated problems with 2.6). Personally, I saw a LOT more problems with 2.3/2.5 and was happy to see an upgrade to 2.6 -- and v2.6 is working much better than all previous versions I've used.
@bbcarter, essentially it does have the same layout, but the graphics are gone. :(
"So you're basically saying you don't care if people are using automated tools to vote up submissions. That's good to know."
Did I say that? I said that Bill isn't benefitting from such activities (if true) anyway.
"And I guess desphinning a ton of posts = bad."
No, I didn't say that either. I don't agree with the types of content he desphinned. His excuses for Desphinning were lousy too in my humble opinion.
"But I don't think all that deserves a ban"
Then take it up with the admin team. I didn't do it. But I'm glad he's gone and I agree with Skitzzo's Desphinn reason on this particular post.
As I said in previous comments, I hate how new bloggers and Sphinn newcomers who actually write good content are being desphunn for stupid reasons (MSN logo, FF2 issues, "content [on an entire blog] is king" etc.) That's not cool by me.
"You're kidding me right?"
That's spam. Not junk. The stuff Bill is sphinning isn't spam.
At the end of the day, it's still a judgment call. Your junk may not be my junk. The community will wholly decide whether the content gets frontpaged, but still, who is benefitting? I still like putting it that way.
Honestly, even if there *was* bot activity, who is REALLY benefitting in the end? Would it be the person that Edward has decided to put behind the crosshairs, or would it be the community here at Sphinn? At least Bill wasn't on a Desphinning rampage!
Burgo, fair enough. I may just be giving him the benefit of the doubt, which I prefer to do rather than put someone in the cross-hairs publicly. In any event, should there be a problem like this in the future, there's a great link on the bottom of the page that says "Contact Us" where concerns can be discussed privately and decided upon privately.
Seconded Brent's comments. pageoneresults, I quote you all the time on SERoundtable through WMW, but we're a little more laid back here as part of the "community atmosphere" I think Sphinn wants to help cultivate. As for your comments, the page renders fine on my Firefox (v.3.0.1 which came out tonight!). There is valuable information in this post. If you don't like it, don't Sphinn it. Not everything needs to be Desphunn.
I hate to echo all the others, but it's warranted in this case. You're making the *community* not enjoy wanting to come back. And this is a SOCIAL community where people are supposed to help each other instead of blatantly throw out unwarranted attacks (in this case, I consider your approach to be completely unwarranted).
Further, reporting something as spam on top of Desphinning is just in poor taste. It's certainly NOT spam, and honestly, I call that an abuse of the 'report as spam' button.
Why are you attacking design rather than content? It's disappointing that you also desphunn an article last week because some guy had the MSN butterfly in his logo. What about *reading* the content and making a valid assessment instead of desphinning based on aesthetics or usability? That, too, is in bad taste.
And further, why are you judging the entire post (which is actually informative) on the basis of one site and the number of posts it has? Who cares if there are only 3 posts? That's not the point at all of this submission and has nothing to do with anything.
People use social media for outreach and awareness of this post. I can imagine that the author of this article actually spent time researching the posts. Imagine their dismay when someone (you) actually Desphinns it, because, of all reasons, it doesn't render in Firefox 2! That's really disappointing, wouldn't you think? Talk about investment. And instead of writing a comment with constructive criticism without Sphinning it at all, you essentially "buried" it. It's an insult to the writer and I would personally be disappointed too if it were me.
I'm not sure you realize that this is social media and the people here are acutally that -- people. They have feelings. I think you're crossing the line in more ways than one.
"That would be a blatant copyright and or Registered Trademark violation."
Good. So report him to the MSN trademark office and let them handle it. It's not your job to police the Internet.
"Now I have SER on my arse too."
I should throw out the disclaimer that my comments here represent my personal thoughts and are in no way reflective of the "SER brand."
But if you want to uh, talk about Jill, I'm sure she'd be interested in throwing her two cents about social media usage here. She's been a top notch contribuotr to Sphinn and I personally value her submissions and comments. She is a great community member.
"Don't worry, I'll be departing in about two hours and most likely won't return like many others."
What's the significance of two hours?
"Damn! Drama!"
No, it's not about "a simple Desphunn" -- implying you did it once. I even alluded to the fact that you Desphunn someone because of their logo.
To reiterate my previous points, this is a *community,* pageoneresults. If I started desphinning every single post because I disliked a blog's favicon or thought they had a disturbing logo or their avatar was too ugly, that would be stupid and doesn't benefit the community at all. It only makes you look bad for nitpicking silly details when the better option would be to IGNORE IT. Or comment constructively. You've done nothing but throw out insults.
That is why I love Plurk. I'd hope more people would join. It really is very engaging.
David, I haven't seen you there yet! :)
Why is it that people are quick to hit the Desphinn button only because its Jason Calacanis?
Very similar sentiment to a post I wrote last year: How I Network on Different Social Sites
@Maki, I do remember that. I think we discussed that when it happened. ;)
One year later and I still don't think he gets it.
I'm in agreement. Ann has a sea of tools at her disposal and is being totally generous by sharing them with us. You rock, Ann :)
Thanks Dana! :) For what it's worth, I spoke on SMX Social Media (Oct '07; I couldn't make it out to April '08) and look forward to the next one! :)
.exe is a given (and I hope he was kidding!) :)
.0 is just strange (and I provided commentary on my Search Engine Roundtable post this morning). I'm happy to hear that Matt mentions that Google will revisit old decisions in this case.
Thanks Ian. They're related stories but this is the one with the Google clarification plus a pretty extensive investigation.
