Good post - I didn't know that they only looked at the more specific part. Handy to know.
Looks like the problem might be even more widespread than just .0 - some .1 URLs not working either... Stay tuned to the comments!
The boys and girls Ciaran! It was Lucy who put a lot of the work into this so thanks to her for this one :-)
Thanks for the sphinn though!
I'm not sure I like the tone of the post - very confrontational but each to their own. The face that Dell has sold $500,000 through twitter, however, is well worth a sphinn!
Yeah good point patrick, not only lots of visits and mentions but a good number of links.
I hate to rain on the party but isn't this just a sales page? It's not really a guide on how to do the maths even though it does cover some of the points... Maybe I'm just in a bad mood today :-)

Great information. Essential reading if you're in the UK seo business.
To be clear, I don't think this is necessarily spamming in as much as it's cloaking, or redirecting or anything but this is generating pages (from a database as Dave points out) that are designed to capture eyeballs which serve little purpose to the user.
Whether it falls on the side of white hat or grey hat i dont' really care but implementing pages like these:
http://laptops.dell.co.uk/lap-tops/71/
http://laptops.dell.co.uk/laptops/60/
Is really messy and gives SEO a bad name.
Perhaps spamming is a bad name for it but I think for such a big name to do something this messy (for want of a better word) makes the whole SEO business look like we're back in 2000.
That's why I sphunn the post. But feel free to disagree (and I don't take the desphinns personally at all - I welcome healthy discussion)
Rob - I think there are a couple of key things to remember when looking at the earnings data.
- People working in foreign countries where money is worth more
- People who are 'in seo' but in reality are small site owners or bloggers who don't really earn that much from the web,
- Yes probably PPC employees and other monkeys. Breaking £30k in the UK is relatively difficult outside of London unless you're head of search or similar.
(disclaimer, not that I'm saying all PPC employees are monkeys. That's not what i meant at all. Err..)
Golly - some corking answers on there hey Ciaran my old buddy, old pal
I think you need to be at SMX to redeem your free drink voucher unfortunately Ciaran.
"the good old days" - yes except that it's still happening for very big brands today! And it appears to be working!
Thanks Kevin, every time you mention Distilled at SES we'll buy you a beer :-)
* - this offer subject to T&C which cannot be found. Offer may not be true.
It was interesting to read about Kate moss - her results have blatantly had some work done on them. Britney may be a tougher case! (although using social media is easy!)
Personally i think it's a pretty poor use experience to be putting links to loan sites etc when all they're trying to do is but badges on their site. Having said that, it works. Big time. Matt is clearly waaaay ahead of the game and a stupidly smart guy. SEO has always been about pushing the envelope and Matt pushes it hard and gets awesome results. I have a huge amount of respect for matt.
Having read the comments you seem to have backtracked a fair amount. Do I think you over-reacted? Yes. Do I think it's worthy of discussion? Possibly.
What I really take issue with is the nature in which you presented the argument - you didn't say "I don't like this headline, I think it's too aggressive. What do you guys think? By the way this actually made me unsubscribe" what you essentially said was "I don't like this headline it's aggressive and I unsubscribed. What the hell are seomoz doing sending me emails anyway? Sphinn send me emails all the time and I'm happy with it. Just not from seomoz"
Basically - I think you were too aggressive in your tone when presenting your argument and too personal in your attack. Therefore I desphinned and left my comment. If you had gone about it in a more pleasent manner I probably wouldn't of desphinned but instead just left a comment saying "no, I don't think it's too aggressive - clearly a joke"
[also - I already tried to comment once but didn't seem to have worked? If that shows up later than it'll read all strange so please ignore]
Seconded - there's no content in the submission or the article. It's just an advert for crazy egg, which may indeed by great but I don't think we should be encouraging such weak articles onto the homepage.
Nice article, but how can you not mention SEOmoz's marketplace!! Essential resource for job hunting.
Nice link Rishil - that topic is something I'd like to cover in more detail in a later post but Vanessa provides some nice info. Knowing which profile pages are liable to rank and which aren't is useful knowledge to have!
So this big change everyone was worried about is already live it seems! No one noticed it seemed :-)
Overall great work Danny - really looking forward to the new features!
My $0.02 - when you say that you'll be rewarding items which have more comments on them, the problem with this is that most stories don't get any comments until they hit the homepage (from what I've seen). I think this is due mainly to the fact that most sphinns come from people using a sphinn this widget on the site itself.
Until there is a decent upcoming section like on digg (or some other system) which allows people to be made aware of new stories before they are hot I'm not sure placing emphasis on comments will help - all it will do will mean people will start leaving comments like on SU such as "taken from the page....." and just quote something from the article.
I agree that discussion points should be encouraged and I like the fact that this more of a forum community than a site like digg but I'm concerned it may lead to things which we don't really want?
Anyway - I'm sure you guys will keep on top of it and the best way to find out is to suck it and see! Just wanted to share my comments really.
