Don't be a hater! :)
Just because these buttons aren't a panacea, doesn't mean they should be cast into outer darkness. Speaking personally, I've used them from time to time myself, so I can't in all honesty say they're totally worthless.
But you're right -- it's probably wildly overoptimistic to think they'll make a huge difference for most blogs/sites.
Okay, programming geeky-types. These are seven really useful features that real life needs, but doesn't have. Only thing is, I'm not sure what OS and language "real life" is written in... but that shouldn't be a problem for you alpha geeks. So get cracking on the code, y'all.
I LOL'd at DaveN's "picture."
This Cuil thing has to be a joke, right? I mean, like Spinal Tap, the results go up to 11 (one better than Google). The only way they're going to kill Google is if the folks in the 'plex die laughing...
People who cynically "use" social media to manipulate or lie to others for the purpose of link building are fundamentally disrespecting the people they interact with. Disrespect breeds disrespect. If SEOs want respect for themselves as professionals, they need to respect the people they're marketing to on behalf of their clients.
Compare and contrast with the "game social media for thousands of links" kind of ideas. This is real marketing. Manipulating for links is not.
Thanks! I thought about submitting it myself everywhere, just to prove the techniques work, but Gyutae beat me to it over here, darn it. :) Oh, well, there's always the next article...
Well, so far nobody's asked me my definition of SEO. Guess I'm not important enough. :)
But here goes: in my world, SEO is the stuff you do to make it easier for the search engines to accurately index your content so your potential customers can more easily find you through the search engines' natural (unpaid) search results. The funny thing is, though, most of the stuff you do to make it easier for the search engines are also things that make it easier for your human visitors.
Which isn't really such a surprise, given that what the search engines most want to rank highly are pages human searchers find most valuable and useful for any given search query.
Given that, I fail to see how SEO can possibly "die" unless you think the general concept of website usability is also going to "die". Site optimization is (or at least should be) a foundational part of building a good, usable, useful website.
My two cents, less taxes, adjusted for inflation.
I wonder what would happen if somebody reported on the SEORipOff.com site the company that's apparently behind SEORipOff.com for allegedly starting a phony "ripoff reporting" site that's nothing more than a thinly-disguised lead generation tool.
Would the massive self-referentiality cause the whole thing to implode?
Huh. Who knew? Not me, that's for sure. Never been a "digger" so I wasn't aware of all the differences. Sounds as though I guessed right when I signed up for Mixx instead. :)
I love how this takes real world scenarios and tries them out in both services. Really brings it home how practical and business-relevant they can be when used correctly. Nice find, Deb!
This is an absolutely awesome article, and excellent advice. I wish I'd written it! :)
This article illustrates why Christine is one of my heroes. When I grow up, I want to be just like her. :)
I especially found interesting the part about how women tend to read the words while men tend to start with the pictures and skim the text. I hear all the time about how "people" don't read online, but that was at odds with my personal experience -- I read online all the time. Sure, I skim too, especially when I'm in a hurry, but when an article grabs my attention, or a product is something I'm really interested in, I'll read every word on the page.
Wonderful food for thought here.
Another nice article in an interesting series analyzing the online stratgies of major candidates from both parties.
Oh, great... something else to suck up every spare moment I already don't have enough of. I will not sign up for Twitter, no matter how fun and useful Jenn makes it sound. I will not, I will not, I will not....
...well, maybe just once, just to see what it's like.
Relying on one source for website traffic and revenue is pretty darned scary. Diversify, diversify, diversify!
