I so relate. The first conference I attended alone (without the entourage from the company I work for) was this year at SMX West. The first person I introduced myself to was Danny Sullivan on the first night. I was a nervous wreck and so awkward, which is stupid. I'm what you would call a "mature" man (52) and Danny has to be the nicest guy on the planet. But, I couldn't help but notice a brief "who in the world are you?" look on his face. He was as nice as he could be, but I just wanted to hide under a table. That's the introvert in me.

But I made it through the week, made some introductions, passed out a few cards, wrote a few articles... Now a few folks out there actually can put my face or at least "The Web Optimist" with my name.

A few...

I have been preaching the opt in not opt out for Google for quite a while. I'm with you on this one, Michael.

I blogged on basically the same idea several months ago in "Will Trust Kill the Algorithm?" on my blog at weboptimist.com, but with a slight twist.

Why else would Google be jumping feet first into as much social networking as it can? It's called "cover-your-ass!"

I'm with Shari and Jill on this one. I don't see nofollow as the link juice funnel that it is being promoted as being. It's like putting a band-aid on a bee sting in a room of bees. occasional first aid is OK, but fix the real problem. Don't keep slapping nofollow band-aids all over the site.

Amen. Google claims to want to dish out the best, most accurate search results and then "fixes" one that is 100% accurate.

Sheesh!

Fabulous! Any post that pulls in Danny Sullivan AND Matt Cutts gets my Sphinn!

Nice disussion. The truth is, we need to be concerned with all of the search engines in regards to privacy issues. Google just gets the most attention because it's the biggest.

I really don't care for any of them tracking my movements across the web. Of course, I KNOW that they are doing it once I sign in. The vast majority of web surfers don't have a clue what happens when they sign in to use all of those freebies the engines offer.

That's the part I consider evil.

Jaan gives a nice overview of the "contest" where Google enlists the aid of college students to bring local businesses into the Adwords fold. Is it a contest or just Google's way of enlisting cheap labor to sell more ads?

As Jaan says in his post, "What do you think?"

Great advice. I'm definitely bookmarking this one. I've submitted to some of the sites on the list, but some of the others are new to me and look like quality sites to consider.

Thanks!

We all knew this was coming. Besides thinking Google's gone overboard, I have two comments. Why didn't they make this change to their Webmaster Guidelines before the PR massacre?

And, of course, this just encourages more Adwords purchases.

Google should just drop the "Don't be evil" B.S. Obviously self-serving greed doesn't count as evil to them.

Part of the problem is that agents all have their own individual web site in addition to the company web site and they have totally unreal expectations. For instance, I'm in Palm Springs, CA where there is probably one of the highest concentrations of real estate agents in the country. EVERY one of them wants to rank #1 for "Palm Springs real estate" and, to make it worse, they want to do it without spending much money.

And, they want Flash and images EVERYWHERE.

Unfortunately, many have been victims to SEOs who were more than happy to take their money knowing it was a losing cause.

It's a drag, but I think everyone knew NF would have to be implemented at some point. Trusting folks to behave is kind of like "honor among thieves" I'm afraid.

Count me in! I think Danny was going to comment on a blog post I did a couple of weeks ago and he ran out of Daily Searchcast time. I wanna know what he was going to say!!!!!

Yep, I'm one of those concerned about Google's apparent lack of concern about privacy. Maybe Google will eventually support some way to set privacy settings, too. We can only hope...
